YOUR MONEY, DAY TO DAY
How to identify and cancel card subscriptions
To identify and cancel card subscriptions, review transactions and receipts, find the account and company billing you, and complete cancellation with that provider. Keep the effective date and confirmation. Deleting an app, changing cards or removing a payment method does not establish that the contract has ended.
Start with a record of recurring charges
Review several statements and email receipts: an annual service may not appear this month. An abbreviated merchant name alone does not identify the provider; match the date, amount and receipt before treating a charge as a subscription.
If you do not recognise a transaction or suspect fraud, contact the issuer immediately through its official channel. This guide organises cancellation of services you identified; it does not replace the unauthorised-charge process.
- Record the service, charge description and account email, without passwords.
- Note the amount, currency, billing frequency and next renewal shown on the receipt.
- Identify who bills you: the provider directly, Apple, Google Play or another company.
- Mark each service to keep, review or cancel; leave unverified details open.
Cancel with the company that bills you
Apple directs subscriptions billed by Apple to the Subscriptions section of your account. Google Play requires the Google Account holding the subscription. If it is missing, check the receipt and account used before opening another request.
Google states that uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. Netflix also separates signing out or deleting the app from completing cancellation; if a third party bills you, it directs you to that provider. Use the applicable official link under Sources.
- Open the official site or app yourself, avoiding links in unexpected messages.
- Find the subscription and choose cancellation; complete the steps until confirmation appears.
- Check whether renewal stops or access ends immediately, and save the effective date.
- Keep the confirmation email or screenshot and any terms about outstanding charges or refunds.
Ending a service and excluding an automatic charge differ
BAC Costa Rica publishes a process for excluding automatic card charges through its channels. Ask the issuer about that payment arrangement; it does not by itself establish that an external subscription or contractual obligation has ended.
Ask the provider to confirm cancellation and the issuer to explain the scope of the bank process in your case. If charging continues after the effective date, collect confirmation and request a review. A refund request is also separate: cancellation does not automatically return earlier payments.
Compare spending without claiming recovered money
Fictional example: two services cost ₡2,500 and ₡4,500 monthly, and another costs ₡24,000 annually. The annual service is equivalent to ₡2,000 monthly: together they represent ₡9,000 a month or ₡108,000 a year if the amounts stay unchanged.
These are not platform prices or savings achieved by Axi. If an annual plan is already paid, stopping renewal does not mean recovering that payment. Confirm service dates, taxes, currency and terms before estimating future spending avoided.
A message and a final check
You could ask the provider: “I want to cancel renewal of [service] for account [reference]. Please confirm the effective date, how long access continues and whether any charge or step remains. I need confirmation of cancellation.”
At your next transaction review, compare the charge date with the effective date and billed period. If something differs, continue using the same case reference. Do not share PINs, CVVs, passwords or one-time codes; MICITT recommends protecting access and card details in messages, emails and calls.
Where Axi adds value
