YOUR MONEY, DAY TO DAY
Card statement date and payment due date: the difference
The statement closing date ends a billing period. The payment due date sets the deadline for the relevant payment. Use the dates your issuer provides and review the full-payment and minimum amounts in each currency separately.
Separate dates from amounts
Find the closing date, deadline and amounts on the official statement. Do not add a fixed number of days to calculate the due date; product terms differ.
BAC distinguishes payment in full, minimum payment, closing balance and updated balance. An on-time minimum keeps the account current but does not settle the whole debt; interest may apply to what remains. Check your issuer’s terms.
A fictional timeline
Suppose a statement closes on 20 October and its payment is due on 5 November. The first date closes that period; the second is the stated payment deadline. A purchase posted on 21 October would fall in the next period in this example.
Authorization and posting dates can differ. Do not assume where a pending purchase will appear or spend merely to extend the payment period. Check the posted transaction and next statement.
What payment in full means
BAC explains that avoiding qualifying purchase interest requires paying the full specified amount on time and satisfying the previous period’s payment conditions. Cash advances and financing may follow different rules.
Ask about earlier balances, instalments and non-waivable interest. If you cannot cover the required payment, contact your issuer before the deadline to understand options and costs; a partial payment does not necessarily remove interest.
Turn the statement into a checklist
Fictional amounts: ₡150,000 payment in full and ₡10,000 minimum. Paying the minimum is not paying ₡150,000. The arithmetic difference is ₡140,000; the later actual balance also depends on transactions and interest.
- Record closing date, due date and full/minimum payment in each currency.
- Check purchases, applied payments, instalments and pending charges.
- Confirm payment-channel cut-off times and processing delays.
- Set your own reminder and keep the receipt.
- Check that payment was applied; contact the issuer with its reference if missing.
